All Hail King George
Our Great Leader. What is the difference between George W. Bush and King George? Just a different century. Mr. Bush believes he has the same power that his ancestor had. Scroll to mid-page for reference to Mr. Bush being related to all monarchs in Europe. What he and the Republicans seem to forget, is that we had an American Revolution which threw that line out of power here. Mr. Bush is acting like that little bit of history never happened. He is claiming powers which our Constitution does not give him. He hopes that none of us ever find out, until it is too late.
Thanks to some great reporting, we now know that he has claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office. Some of these specifically passed because he has claimed powers which are not his. And since it is a Republican controlled congress, you know he has gone too far, if they see a problem.
Among the laws Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ‘’whistle-blower” protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research.
Legal scholars say the scope and aggression of Bush’s assertions that he can bypass laws represent a concerted effort to expand his power at the expense of Congress, upsetting the balance between the branches of government. The Constitution is clear in assigning to Congress the power to write the laws and to the president a duty ‘’to take care that the laws be faithfully executed.” Bush, however, has repeatedly declared that he does not need to ‘’execute” a law he believes is unconstitutional.
But with the disclosure of Bush’s domestic spying program, in which he ignored a law requiring warrants to tap the phones of Americans, many legal specialists say Bush is hardly reluctant to bypass laws he believes he has the constitutional authority to override.
But the words ‘’in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution” are the catch, legal scholars say, because Bush is according himself the ultimate interpretation of the Constitution. And he is quietly exercising that authority to a degree that is unprecedented in US history.
Bush is the first president in modern history who has never vetoed a bill, giving Congress no chance to override his judgments. Instead, he has signed every bill that reached his desk, often inviting the legislation’s sponsors to signing ceremonies at which he lavishes praise upon their work. Then, after the media and the lawmakers have left the White House, Bush quietly files ‘’signing statements” — official documents in which a president lays out his legal interpretation of a bill for the federal bureaucracy to follow when implementing the new law. The statements are recorded in the federal register. In his signing statements, Bush has repeatedly asserted that the Constitution gives him the right to ignore numerous sections of the bills — sometimes including provisions that were the subject of negotiations with Congress in order to get lawmakers to pass the bill. He has appended such statements to more than one of every 10 bills he has signed. Read the complete report here.
It is far past time that we tell Mr. Bush and this Congress that we still don’t want a King. Actually, a King would be better than what Mr. Bush wants to be. Being a dictator is what he has said repeatedly would be a heck of a lot easier for him. And we know he likes his work to be easy. He takes more than fifty percent of time off from his job. He has complained that his job is hard work. Sounds like a spoiled royal bastard to me.
He is in the first steps of becoming a dictator. When you break the laws and claim that you have the power to do so, you are a dictator. Right now, it is a benevolent dictator for most Americans. But, like raising a child, it is far easier to stop the bad behavior when it first raises it ugly head, than to wait until you have a monster on your hands.
That is what we have sitting in the Office of the President. A terrible two year old child. One who throws tantrums and demands that he gets his own way. No amount of cajoling, of common sense, of reasoning will change his demands or behavior. But, unlike a two year old child, he does not just destroy his toys or your house, Mr. Bush can and has destroyed this country, the world.
Some dictators come to power with a military takeover. There is much death, destruction and disruption with this type. But, most dictators come to power within the law. They use the law and fear. There is always an enemy to fear, so that they must change the laws to keep us safe. Under this type of dictatorship, things on the surface seem the same, but then when the power grab is complete, the destruction starts. The rounding up of, the jailing and the killing of citizens begins. It first starts with those enemies. Then it is those who stepped up and tried to protect those people. Then it is those who speak out against what is happening. Then other groups are targeted. Dictators use fear.
Fear works so well, because if you are living in fear, you try to make yourself invisible. You are quiet. You are a good citizen of the “Party”.
After September 11, 2001 Mr. Bush and the Republicans all told us that if we did not go along with their plans, we were supporting the terrorists. That we were either for Mr. Bush or we were enemies of America.
They played the fear card well. Of course, this was all part of the PNAC,
The Project for the New American Century plan. They had tried to sell this to other Presidents, but none of those men were crazy enough or wanted to be dictator. So, they had to find a man that was both of those. Crazy and power hungry. And they found him, in George W. Bush.
They stated that to get their agenda for world domination, America would have to start with a “New Pearl Harbor”. What did they mean? A surprise attack on American soil, which they would be able to use to put fear into the American people. When you fear, you are willing to go along with anything which you perceive will keep you safe. Fear, fear, fear. They sold fear. Many American’s bought it. How did they sell it? 911 was spoken at every opportunity. Didn’t matter if it had anything to do with the subject at hand. A kitten up the White House tree? 911 got into the story somehow. A Department of Homeland Security, (have you noticed that throughout history, dictators call their country’s Motherland, Fatherland, Homeland), terror alert color charts. Which were always raised when this Administration was either in trouble with some news coming out or they were about to do something which they knew we would not approve of.
Five years ago, our country was prosperous. We were respected in most of the world. We were at peace. The future looked bright, forever. Now, we have wars, with more planned, our national debt is over $30,000.00 for each man, women and child in America, gas prices are hurting us, medical insurance and health care is sky high, housing and food costs are becoming hard to afford. On and on the list goes. The future looks bleak.
I yearn for yesteryear. Not the fifties, but the nineties. I want to go back to a President, whom I did not agree with on many things, but who gave us hope and a great economy. I will always take a President who has moral failings in sexual matters, but who does not think of himself as the King. Mr. Clinton’s sexual activity did not threaten me, nor harm me. But Mr. Bush’s grab for power, threatens me. And it has harmed America and the world. I am afraid.
