Do To Others, Do Unto You
Here’s one of the problems when the Government breaks the law. It seems that it is impossible to fix it when it turns out that you were terribly wrong.
Case in point: Two Chinese Muslim men, Abu Bakker Qassim and A’Del Abdu al-Hakim, were rounded up in Pakistan and shipped off to our Guantánamo Gulog. Four years ago. They were mistakenly captured as enemy combatants.
The U.S. military decided, a year ago, that Abu Bakker Qassim and A’Del Abdu al-Hakim are not “enemy combatants” as first suspected after their 2001 arrests in Pakistan. They were captured and shipped to Guantánamo Bay along with hundreds of other suspected terrorists.
These men’s plight has posed a dilemma for the Bush administration and courts. Previously, a federal judge said the detention of the ethnic Uighurs men in Guantánamo Bay is unlawful, but that there was nothing federal courts could do.
Lawyers for the two contend they should be released, something the Bush Administration opposes, unless they can go to a country other than the United States.
So, this Administration can arrest and detain innocent people for four years and there is nothing the Federal Courts can do about it? Excuse me, you made the mess, clean it up! Of course there is a way to do justice here. These two men are innocent. Open up the cells and free them. This Administration took them from another country. Doesn’t this come under the rule “If you break it, you own it”. This Administration must now make a place for them in our country. And pay them compensation for this crime committed upon them by the United States.
These two men have done everything they can do under the law. Their last chance to gain their freedom through the courts was just denied. The Supreme Court rejected an appeal Monday. Now what? Do they just remain in prison? Innocent men? Forever?
The Silver Rule:
Anything they can do to others, they can do to you!~Alexander Strouss~
The U.S. government has been unable to find a country willing to accept the two men, along with other Uighurs. There are others? How many? We do not know at this time, because all of this is being done in secret. This does not sound like my country. At least not the one before 2001. Didn’t we fight a World War and a Cold War against countries which detained people in secret, with no means of access to the courts? To the Rule of Law?
They cannot be returned to China because they likely will be tortured or killed. Unlike what is happening in Guantánamo prison? At least our government knows that this would really give them bad press. Because we know they don’t really care about sending people to places where they will be tortured or killed, unless it will be proven that they have done so. Deniablilty is how they operate.
It would have taken an unusual intervention of the Supreme Court to deal with the case now. The case is Qassim v. Bush, 05-892.What’s the problem. The Supreme Court had no problem stepping in and taking “unusual intervention” when it came installing Mr. Bush and his Cabal. They said they had the power then to overlook the will of the people and the laws of the land. So, now that two mens lives and freedom are on the line, the Supreme Court decides it must play by the rules. No, this time, do justice!
Once again, I am ashamed of what this Administration is doing. If these men were not terrorist four years ago, after their treatment by this Administration, it would not surprise me that they are now. Most terrorism happens because of the lack of justice these people live under. If we want to stop terrorism, replace it with justice!
Someone needs to do what is right! Do Justice! Release these men. Mr. Bush and his Cabal have once again messed in their cages. If they can’t clean it up, step aside and let someone who knows how and cares enough to do the right thing. Just do it. This is the least we can expect from our Government!
