What Constitution?
In the dark days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a small group of lawyers from the White House and the Justice Department began meeting to debate a number of novel legal strategies to help prevent another attack. Soon after, President Bush authorized the National Security Agency to begin conducting electronic eavesdropping on terrorism suspects in the United States, including American citizens, without court approval. Meeting in the FBI’s state-of-the-art command center in the J. Edgar Hoover Building, the lawyers talked with senior FBI officials about using the same legal authority to conduct physical searches of homes and businesses of terrorism suspects–also without court approval, one current and one former government official tell U.S. News. “There was a fair amount of discussion at Justice on the warrantless physical search issue,” says a former senior FBI official. “Discussions about–if [the searches] happened–where would the information go, and would it taint cases.”
FBI Director Robert Mueller was alarmed by the proposal, the two officials said, and pushed back hard against it. “Mueller was personally very concerned,” one official says, “not only because of the blowback issue but also because of the legal and constitutional questions raised by warrantless physical searches.” {In Depth}
What did the Senators and the American people think the Patriot Act was all about?
Very few Senators even bothered to read it, (although in their defense, they were not given time to do so. In the column of one more failure of their doing their jobs, they should never pass a law, especially one with such a broad scope of fundamentally changing the “Law of the Land”, of destroying the Constitution, which they swore to defend against all enemies, without reading and agreeing with it. Ignorance is no excuse!). Their response when questioned about this, “it was just a temporary thing, with a time limit. Just to protect The Homeland during this crisis. It would not be permanent, ever, never, couldn’t happen here. In times of war, all of us must give up some of our Rights”.
In every war, these same excuses have been used and after the crime has been committed by an Administration, the Supreme Court has said “NO, NO”!
I don’t know the exact number of Americans who bothered to read this abomination. But from those I have asked, no one has. I did. Be afraid, be very afraid.
Temporary? They just passed fourteen of the sixteen new rules (laws) making them permanent. Unless the Supreme Court, when one of these laws is brought before them, find it unconstitutional, (and this is one of the reasons that Mr. Bush installed these particular new Justices(?) on the Court).
Our Constitution is voided. When this Administration can search my house without obtaining a 4th Amendment Search warrant, the Constitution is voided. When this Administration can listen to my phone conversations without obtaining, within the time limit that Congress set for them, a FISA search warrant, the Constitution is voided. When this Administration can read my e-mails (which is the Paper of our age) without obtaining a 4th Amendment Search warrant, the Constitution is voided. When this Administration can go to war, without Congress declaring war, the Constitution is voided. When this Administration can decide which Treaty’s (which under the Constitution is the highest law of the land) they will uphold and which they will throw away (Geneva Convention Treaty being one), the Constitution is voided.
We still have time to save our Constitution. But, we don’t have much time. Now is the time for all true Patriots, those Americans who love their country, to rise up and say, “I am mad as hell, and I am not going to take it any longer” from the movie Network. Let’s not let our Constitution be voided permanently.
One of the ways to save our country, is to vote into office people who will fight for this country. Not just save their jobs by playing it safe. Support the Senators who are signing onto the Censure Bill and demand that the other Senators do so. Good God people! A President was Censured for lying about a blowjob!
What should happen to Mr. Bush and his whole Cabal for voiding the Constitution? A Medal of Freedom, perhaps?
