Those Whiny Brats Grow Up To Be Conservatives!
Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative.
At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals.
The whiny kids tended to grow up conservative, and turned into rigid young adults who hewed closely to traditional gender roles and were uncomfortable with ambiguity.
Block admits in his paper that liberal Berkeley is not representative of the whole country. But within his sample, he says, the results hold. He reasons that insecure kids look for the reassurance provided by tradition and authority, and find it in conservative politics. The more confident kids are eager to explore alternatives to the way things are, and find liberal politics more congenial.
In a society that values self-confidence and out-goingness, it’s a mostly flattering picture for liberals. It also runs contrary to the American stereotype of wimpy liberals and strong conservatives.” {In-Depth}
A similar work by John T. Jost of Stanford and colleagues in 2003 drew a political backlash. The researchers reviewed 44 years worth of studies into the psychology of conservatism, and concluded that people who are dogmatic, fearful, intolerant of ambiguity and uncertainty, and who crave order and structure are more likely to gravitate to conservatism. Critics branded it the “conservatives are crazy” study and accused the authors of a political bias.
I have never been able to abide whiny children. I must know, at some deep level, that someday they will try to take away my America. I find most Conservatives whiny. They whine about the Liberals trying to take away their religious practice. They whine about the Separation of Religion and State. They whine about the Ten Commandments not being displayed. They whine about prayer not being allowed in State run schools, (even though Jesus told you when he was asked how we should pray, to “Go into a closet and pray”. Remember the whining they did this last Christmas. That the Liberals were trying to take it away from them? Good God! They have a Federal Religious Holiday! Do we celebrate any other religion’s holiday?
Stop whining! Go to church and practice your beliefs there and in your home. Praise God and be thankful that you have your freedoms and don’t try to foist your religion off on the rest of us!
NO SENSE HERE SIDE BAR:
Things I have observed or thoughts which have come unbidden to my mind:
Has anyone else noticed that most Conservatives do not show their upper teeth? When talking, smiling or even laughing, they mostly show their bottom teeth. (Yes, there are always a few who do not fit the majority of Conservatives). While Liberal’s show their upper teeth. I would love to get a grant to study this. Is it genetic? Do you show only lower teeth because your parents only show lower teeth? Is it cultural? Is it because you are raised by and become a judgmental person?
Just from my own experience, it must be genetic. I was adopted into a very strict religious Republican family. We lived in a community who were all the same religion, It was a University Community of this religion. 1500 people in the Community and 1500 students in the University during the school year. My two brothers and one sister, (they were not adopted) and I went to church school there. From first grade, Prep and then through college. Politically, all members of this community were Republican.
My brothers and sister, and yes, my friends from this upbringing, are very Conservative and Religious. While I am very Progressive and not Religious. I show my upper teeth. Someone do a study! I hope you start noticing this. Look at the Media talking heads. Do they show their upper teeth? This is a sign that they can not hide! I give you George and Dick as examples. Go forth and observe!
